Give & Receive Constructive Feedback –
At Jig Reel Studios, we know feedback can make or break an actor’s growth. Get it right, and you’ll improve faster. Handle it poorly, and it can kill confidence—or worse, create tension in class. So whether you’re giving notes to a scene partner or receiving them from your instructor, here’s how to handle feedback like a pro in scene study class.
Why Feedback Matters (Yes, Even the Tough Notes)
Great actors never stop learning, and that means embracing feedback—both positive and constructive.
✅ Good feedback helps you:
– Spot blind spots in your acting
– Break repetitive habits
– Grow faster than practicing alone
At our Los Angeles scene study classes, we create a culture where feedback is helpful, not harsh. Here’s how to do it right.
How to GIVE Feedback That Actually Helps
1. Be Specific (Not Vague)
❌ “That was good.” (What was good? The emotion? The pacing?)
✅ “Your reaction in the second beat felt really authentic—it pulled me in.”
2. Focus on the Work, Not the Person
❌ “You’re too stiff.” (Makes it personal.)
✅ “The character might loosen up here—what if you tried it with more ease?”
3. Offer Solutions, Not Just Criticism
❌ “That didn’t work.” (Not helpful.)
✅ “What if you tried it slower? The character seems like they’re holding back.”
4. Balance Praise with Growth Notes
Even Meryl Streep gets direction. Always include something that worked before suggesting adjustments.
How to RECEIVE Feedback Without Getting Defensive
1. Listen First, React Later
Your instinct might be to explain why you did something—but resist. Just absorb the note first.
2. Separate Yourself from the Character
A note on your performance isn’t a judgment on you. Don’t take it personally.
3. Ask Questions If You’re Unsure
❌ Nods silently (but is confused).
✅ “Do you mean I should try it with more anger or just intensity?”
4. Try It Right Away (If Possible)
The best way to see if a note works? Test it in the moment. Even if it feels weird at first, give it a shot.
What NOT to Do in Feedback Sessions
🚫 Argue with the note – Even if you disagree, try it. You might discover something.
🚫 Over-apologize – “I’m so bad at this!” makes it awkward. Just say “Got it, I’ll try that.”
🚫 Give unsolicited advice to others – Unless the instructor asks, let them lead the feedback.
